Mission
CONAA is the Council on Nursing and Anthropology, which was founded in 1969 by the first nurses to receive doctorates in anthropology. CONAA is a committee of the Society for Medical Anthropology within the American Anthropological Association, but is also active in the Society of Applied Anthropology (SfAA). CONAA’s mission is to explore culture and client care, and the preparation of nurses as culturally-competent caregivers.

Common interests of CONAA members are basic and applied health research, improved health care for undeserved populations, and encouraging cultural content in nursing education.

Of the current membership, about half are nurse-anthropologists. Others include those with graduate degrees in nursing with a specialty of transcultural or cross-cultural nursing or with a minor in anthropology, as well as anthropologists who teach in schools of nursing or other clinical fields). CONAA holds twice yearly business meetings (AAA and SfAA) followed by informal receptions for networking and mutual support. CONAA sponsors symposia at the AAA and SfAA meetings, publishes a newsletter, a bibliography of members’ publications, and a membership directory.
